New iPhone to use Sony component? No 3D for existing iOS devices after all.
Sony CEO Sir Howard Stringer inadvertently mentioned that the Japanese electronics giant is supplying a camera component for Apple devices; there is no indication which Apple product. However given the new iPhone is on the horizon and Sony doesn’t supply Apple with components, it’s no surprise at the amount of speculation on the internet.
Sir Howard Stringer told the Wall Street Journal
“always puzzles me,”
“Why would I make Apple the best camera?”
It would be ironic if iPhone 5 included a better camera than Sony’s own NGP! Another point for the growing list of iPhone 5 rumours. However one thing that existing iOS devices won’t be getting is 3D.
An April Fools joke posted last week indicated ‘Big Head Games’ in partnership with Korean tech firm Floorpali, had developed a glasses free 3D solution for iOS devices. The solution took the form of a thin clear film that sat on top of iOS screens with App development using BHG SDK. The effect had been described as visually similar to 3DS but on larger and higher resolution screens.
An interesting question is IF any one did create a 3D solution that could be used on mobile phones or even Sony’s NGP, what this might mean for 3DS … its sci-fi for the time being.
